Neuberg an der Mürz#

Neuberg an der Muerz, Styria, market town (since 1996) in the district of Muerzzuschlag, alt. 730 m, pop. 1,676, area 63.98 km2, at the foot of the Schneealpe mountains. Forestry enterprise of the Oesterreichische Bundesforste AG (Austrian Federal Forests), waterworks (1st springwater pipeline to Vienna), Krampen and Fladenhofer Hoehe power stations; metal-processing industries, summer tourism (23,653 overnight stays); museum with hunting paraphernalia of Emperor Franz Joseph I (in the hunting lodge), Nature Museum. - Former Cistercian Abbey (founded in 1327 by Duke Otto the Merry, secularised in 1786), only Styrian Abbey that has preserved its mediaeval characteristics; former Collegiate church (now parish church, 14th - 15th century), enormous roof frame, beautiful Gothic tracery windows, Baroque west choir, large fresco in the shape of a winged altar (1505), high altar (1611/12, earliest important Styrian altar from the 17th century), famous "Neuberger Madonna" statue (14th century), additional Lady altar with sitting Madonna and Child (around 1440-1440), Loreto chapel with Rococo altar, pulpit (1670); cloister in the former Abbey (consecration 1344) with sculptures and St. Bernhard's chapel (14th century); former St. Anna church, built around 1420, deconsecrated in 1786, late-Gothic Assumption subsidiary church.
