Neumarkt am Wallersee, province of Salzburg, market town in the district of Salzburg-Land, alt. 552m, pop. 4,457, area 36.26 km2, northeast of Lake Wallersee in the Flachgau region. - District court, Chamber of Labour, Paracelsus community college, banqueting hall, various secondary schools (commercial academy, Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium (federal upper level mathematics-oriented secondary school), secondary schools for economic occupations); dynamic economic structure esp. in industries and trade: electrical industry, conveyor belt production, office chairs and furniture, construction and related trades, chemical industry, supraregional waste processing facility, plastics engineering, trade, summer tourism (28,269 overnight stays) - Early documented mention of Pfongau (around 770 and 834) and Neufahrn (around 790) (both on municipal territory). - Historicist parish church (1887) surrounded by an earth wall (1638/39) with early Baroque gate tower and cemetery (since 1784, Neo-Renaissance style). Late-Gothic filial churches in Neufahrn, Pfongau and Sommerholz (Baroque alterations); Baroque castle in Pfongau (18th century). To the east of Neumarkt am Wallersee Baroque Sighartsstein Castle with castle chapel rebuilt 1614); impressive Baroque and Rococo houses. Museum of local history and culture.
