Nordtirol#

North Tyrol, part of the province of Tyrol. Tyrol was divided when South Tyrol had to be ceded to Italy in 1919; North and ( East Tyrol) (separated from North Tyrol by Italian territory) remained Austrian territory. North Tyrol, which is therefore neither a historically grown nor geographically determined area, is only a small strip extending from west to east (smallest width: 32 km) with an area of 10,628 km2 and a population of 583,072 (1991) situated between Germany and Italy. For this reason North Tyrol borders with other countries (Germany, Italy, Switzerland) are longer than with Austrian provinces (Salzburg in the east, Vorarlberg in the west) North Tyrol, together with South Tyrol, which is famous for its high mountain passes, is situated entirely within a region of high mountains. Main areas: Inntal valley with lateral valleys and surrounding mountain ranges, Ausserfern area in the northwest and the Kitzbueheler Ache river region in the northeast. 8 out of 9 administrative districts and 10 of 11 towns of the province (including the provincial capital Innsbruck) are in North Tyrol.
