Nordtiroler Kalkalpen#

North Tyrolean Limestone Alps, part of the Northern Limestone Alps, comprise the mountain ranges Kaisergebirge Mountains (alt. 2,344 m), Sonnwendgebirge Mountains (alt. 2,299 m), Karwendel Mountains (alt. 2,756 m), Wettersteingebirge Mountains (alt. 2,962 m) and Mieming Mountains, Lechtal Alps (alt. 3,036 m) and Allgaeu Alps (alt. 2,657 m) between the Kitzbueheler Ache river and the Flexen Pass. Characteristics of these mountains include light, steep and sharp-edged crests with enormous talus slopes, narrow and wooded valleys, gorges and large alpine meadows that are sparsely populated. Types of rock: The limestone peaks and tops on the border of the province of Salzburg are made of Dachstein Limestone and Wetterstein Limestone and towards the west of the light grey and splintery Main Dolomite Rock.

Deeply cut mountain passes (Seefelder Sattel, alt. 1,185 m, Scharnitzer Klause, alt. 955 m, Ehrwalder Sattel, alt. 910 m, Fernpass, alt. 1,210 m, Holzleitensattel, alt. 1,119 m), the Kitzbueheler Ache river cross valley and the Achental valley (with Lake Achensee) separate the various mountain groups from each other.
