Notar#
Notary, (notary public, German: Notar) occupational name for a lawyer appointed by the state whose documents are held to provide irrebuttable evidence and who dispenses administrative justice (no involvement in lawsuits).His/her primary tasks are drawing up public documents and working as judicial commissioner, especially in probate procedures. Qualification requirements: university degree (law), seven years of work experience in a notary´s office, notarial exam, registration in the official list of notaries (only a limited number of notaries is licensed by the state). Professional rights and duties are governed by a code of ethics ("Notariatsordnung"). In 1996 388 notaries and 347 candidates were registered (Vienna 71, Lower Austria 83, Burgenland 12, Upper Austria 59, Salzburg 30, Styria 56, Carinthia 34, Tirol 27, Vorarlberg 16).
