Paracelsus eigentlich Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim#

b. Einsiedeln (Switzerland), Nov. 10, 1493, d. Salzburg, Sept. 24, 1541, physician, naturalist and philosopher. Pioneer of modern medicine and organic chemistry. After years of apprenticeship in Villach (from 1502) 1534 in Tyrol (Innsbruck, Sterzing/Vipiteno, Meran/Merano); after years travelling as a physician in Strasbourg, Basle and Colmar returned to Villach and Salzburg via Vienna in 1538. P. broke with the blind belief in the authority of medieval science, demanded the observation of nature and experiments and used his knowledge of chemistry in medicine. P. recognised kidney and bladderstones as deposits, suspected the nature of wound infections and raised surgery to the status of a medical discipline. He systematically described many diseases and also acknowledged traditional forms of healing. The international P. society in Salzburg studies P.'s life and work.
