b. Oberschlierbach (Upper Austria), June 23, 1944, cultural politician (Austrian Social Democratic Party, SPOe). After studying philosophy, free lance work at the ORF (Austrian Broadcasting Corporation) and from 1970 journalist; from 1979 consultant of H. Zilk in the Cultural Department of the City of Vienna, from 1984 director, 1987-1991 president of the Vienna Festival, from 1987-1996 Councillor for Cultural Affairs of the City of Vienna. Initiated the festival "wien modern" (since 1988) and the Kunsthalle art centre in Vienna, extended the Vienna Musical Summer.
