Payer, Julius von#
b. Schoenau near Teplice, Czech Republic (then Teplitz), Sept. 2, 1841, d. Bled, Slovenia (then Veldes), Aug. 29, 1915, polar and alpine explorer, cartographer. Taught at the Military Academy, together with K. Weyprecht 1871 led a preparatory expedition to the Arctic and 1872-1874 the Austro-Hungarian North Pole Expedition; August 30, 1873, discovered the Franz-Joseph-Land, which he first set foot on in 1873 (November 1). P. also took part in the 2nd German North Pole expedition (1869/70) and gave Austrian names to the landscapes he discovered (in North-East Greenland: Tyrolerfjord, Franz-Josef-Fjord). P. was considered an outstanding alpinist, with over 30 first ascents mainly in the Glockner and Ortler ranges. After a stay in Paris 1884-1890 opened a painting school in Vienna and created pencil sketches, documentary pictures and maps of his expeditions.
