Philipp von Sponheim#

b. 1220, d. Krems (Lower Austria), July 22, 1279, Archbishop of Salzburg. Last of the Sponheim lineage. As a relative of the Přemysl dynasty (cousin of Přemysl Otakar II), he became provost of Vyšehrad in 1237 and chancellor of the Kingdom of Bohemia. From 1247 Archbishop of Salzburg and entrusted by Pope Innozenz IV with the administration of the archbishopric. P. was skilful in military matters; suspended by the pope in 1256 and expelled from Salzburg in 1263; 1267 relinquished the title of archbishop and claimed the duchy of Carinthia after his brother Ulrich III, which was also claimed by Otakar II. P. then joined Rudolf I of Habsburg, but failed to obtain Carinthia. Received a pension from the Habsburgs until his death.
