Piave#
Piave, River, in Upper Italy, 220 km long, rises on the southern slopes of the Carnic Alps and opens out into the Gulf of Venice. During World War I the lower course of the river (after it leaves the mountains) formed the new front line from November 1917 onwards, after the 12th Battle of the Isonzo. An attempt by the k. u. k. forces to break through the Italian front in a new offensive on June 15, 1918 failed with heavy losses. The major attack of the Allies in the Piave region on October 24, 1918 resulted in the collapse of the southwest front, in a military catastrophe for the k. u. k. Army in Venetia ( Vittorio Veneto) and in the conclusion of the truce of Villa Giusti at Padua.
