Pirchan, Emil#
b. Brno, Czech Republic (then Bruenn), May 27, 1884, d. Vienna, Dec. 20, 1957, set designer, painter, architect and writer. Studied in Munich and in Vienna under O. Wagner; 1919-1932 set and costume design at the Berlin Staatstheater (expressionist productions together with the director L. Jessner); 1932-1936 art director of the Deutsches Theater in Prague, 1936-1948 and then occasionally also set designer at the Vienna Burgtheater (monumental settings). 1936 taught at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts; 1935-1937 and 1948 summer courses at the Mozarteum, Salzburg. Author of novels, essays, etc.
