Pulkau, Fluss#

Pulkau, river in Lower Austria, a western tributary of the Thaya river, poor water quality, median volume of discharge 0.3 m3/sec. (Zwingendorf). The Pulkau rises in the Waldviertel region north of Horn (311 m) in Lower Austria, crosses into the Weinviertel region near the municipality of Pulkau. (289 m), flowing in an easterly direction past Buchberg mountain (417 m), and joins the Thaya river near the town of Laa an der Thaya (183 m). Numerous crops are grown in the Pulkau Valley (rape seed, sugar beet, barley and grain), with vineyards on the southern slopes around Pulkau, Leodagger and Mailberg (somewhat south of the Pulkau valley, 217 m), where primarily the Gruener Veltliner grape is cultivated, and Haugsdorf (204 m), known for its Blauer Portugieser (a red wine).
