Purtscheller, Ludwig#
b. Innsbruck (Tyrol), Oct. 6, 1849, d. Berne (Switzerland), March 3, 1900 (after a climbing accident Aiguille du Dru in the Montblanc massif), mountaineer. Climbed over 1,600 summits, including over forty 4,000 m to 5,000 m high mountains in the Alps, in the Caucasus and in Africa. 1889 with H. Meyer first ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m); a neighbouring summit (P. Peak), a species of moss and one of lichen bear his name.
