Roman Law: in the late Middle Ages, Roman law as laid down in the Corpus iuris civilis by Emperor Justinian I (482-565) was adopted by European law scholars who had been trained in northern Italy and who, in their function as scholarly advisors to the princes as civil servants or judges, transformed Roman law into subsidiary law which was commonly applicable but subject to local and regional law. Roman Law also formed the basis of European law codes such as the General Austrian Civil Code of Lawdating from 1811.
