Radetzky, Johann Josef Wenzel Graf#
b. Třebenice, Czech Republic (then Trebnitz), Nov. 2, 1766, d. Milan (Italy), Jan. 5, 1858, field marshal (1836), Austria´s most important military leader in the first half of the 19th century. 1813 as chief quartermaster he drew up the plan for the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig, 1818-1828 advisor to Archduke Ferdinand Karl von Oesterreich-Este in Hungary, 1831 until March 1, 1857 commander general of the Austrian army in the kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. 1848/49 R. became popular through his victories (Santa Lucia near Verona on May 6, Vicenza on June 10, Custoza on July 25, 1848, Mortara on March 21, and Novara on March 23, 1849) against the revolutionaries and against Sardinia. F. Grillparzer wrote the poem "In deinem Lager ist Oesterreich" for him and J. Strauss the Elder composed the R. march. R. was buried on Heldenberg in Kleinwetzdorf (Lower Austria). Monument (C. v. Zumbusch, 1891) in front of the government building on Stubenring in Vienna.
