Rainalter, Erwin Herbert#
Rainalter, Erwin Herbert, b. Istanbul (Turkey), June 6, 1892, d. Vienna, Oct. 29, 1960, narrative writer and theatre critic. 1933 participated in the foundation of the National Socialist "Ring nationaler Schriftsteller" and in the same year resigned his membership of the Austrian P.E.N. Club. Worked for the "Voelkischer Beobachter" as a theatre critic in Berlin and returned to Vienna after the Anschluss. His anti-modernist novels on peasant life and historical-biographical works ("Der Sandwirt", 1935) were very successful.
