Rainer, Roland#

Rainer, Roland, b. Klagenfurt (Carinthia), May 1, 1910, architect and town planner. Studied at the University of Technology in Vienna, from 1932 self-employed, 1953/54 Professor at the University of Technology in Hannover, 1955 in Graz, 1956-1980 head of the master course for architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, 1958-1963 town planner in Vienna. In numerous publications he continuously developed a doctrine covering every aspect of architecture, from the single house to urban planning. For private homes R. advocated the concept of living close to nature in compact flat blocks and took up ideas from the antique (atrium house) and from the Orient (garden city Puchenau bei Linz, 1966-1982); for large public buildings R. used an expressive-constructive language as a means of expressing democratic representation (Stadthalle Vienna, 1955-1958; Stadthalle Ludwigshafen, 1962-1965). Awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize 1962, Honorary Medal for Science and Art in 1979.
