Realgymnasium#
Realgymnasium, formerly, name for the mixed classes in the first four years of the Gymnasium and Realschule secondary schools (from 1862), since 1908 on same level as the eight year Gymnasium (secondary school); in due course attracted more students than the Gymnasium school type. The Realgymnasium offers a modern foreign language (instead of Greek) and emphasises natural sciences, in the Reform-Realgymnasium students do not have to learn Latin during the first four grades. The Realgymnasium was re-organised in 1962, a modern foreign language and descriptive geometry were added to the curriculum of the first four years; since 1989 the last four years of Realgymnasium have been divided into science-oriented and mathematics-oriented branches.
