Phylloxera, dangerous plant pest affecting grapevine; in 1868 A. W. Baron of Babo imported grape cultivars for experimentation from America via France to Austria and with them phylloxera was brought to Austria. From 1872 it spread from Klosterneuburg and destroyed almost the entire stand of grapevine. Later it became possible to re-cultivate scions native to Austria using resistant root-stock (wild stock) from America.
