From 1960 in the Foreign Service, member of the Austrian mission to the United Nations in New York (delegate to the Economic and Social Council) from 1962 to 1968, Chief of Cabinet in the Foreign Ministry from 1968 to 1970, Austrian ambassador to Nairobi, Kenya, from 1970 to 1976, in the Forein Ministry from 1976 to 1983 (Deputy Secretary-General from 1982), head of the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva from 1983-88, Secretary General of the (see) European Free Trade Association (EFTA) from 1988 to 1994.
