Rum#
Rum, Tirol, market town in the district of Innsbruck-Land, alt. 621 m, pop. 8,071, area 8.56 km2, situated on the southern slope of the Nordkette mountains north-east of Innsbruck. - Sanatorium run by the Sisters of the Cross (Kreuzschwestern), New Apostolic Community, adult education centre, indoor athletic recreational facility; 3,993 employed persons (1991): commercial enterprises dominate (eg. pharmaceutical products); construction firms, a clothing factory, industrial zone in Neurum and summer tourism (28,743 overnight stays) also contribute to the local economy. - Late Gothic parish church with Gothic frescoes (around 1474), chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary with nativity scene figures made from wax (around 1800), Kaiserkreuz memorial cross, Mittertenn farmhouse type. The town specialises in cribs and nativity scenes, mainly of the Thaurer type. Carnival customs include "Mullen", a parade in which the participants wear traditional, wooden masks.
