Saalach#
Saalach, River, province of Salzburg, south-western tributary of the River Salzach, average rate of flow 44 m3/sec. at Siezenheim, good water quality (stage 1 and 2) except for the section where it flows into the River Salzach. The River Saalach springs from the Kitzbuehel Alps, flows through the Glemm Valley, turns to the north at Maishofen (alt. 768 m), crosses the extensive basin of the Mittelpinzgau Region and then flows between the Steinernes Meer Mountains and Leogang Mountains through the narrow valley of Hohlwegen. The valley narrows to the Knie Pass north of the basin of Lofer but widens again near Unken (alt. 563 m). After passing the Stein Pass and flowing across the Berchtesgadener Land (Lake Saalachsee) the River Saalach constitutes the border between Austria and Bavaria from Piding up to its confluence with the River Salzach north-west of the city of Salzburg. Most important tributaries in Austria: River Urslau (from the east); Leogang Ache river, Haselbach stream and Unkenbach stream (from the west). Important villages and towns: Saalbach-Hinterglemm (alt. 1,002 m), Saalfelden am Steinernen Meer (alt. 748 m) and Lofer (alt. 626 m).
