Sachsenburg#
Sachsenburg, Carinthia, market town in the district of Spittal an der Drau, alt. 559 m, pop. 1,347, since 1992 a municipality in its own right, in the Drau Valley, north-west of the confluence of the Moell river and the River Drau/Drava, in the narrow passage between Upper Drau Valley and Lurnfeld Basin; the village Obergottesfeld now forms part of the town. - Timber industry, summer tourism (14,202 overnight stays). - Documented mention 1213; remains of a mediaeval fortification (formerly serving to control traffic through a passage protected by 2 castles) with gate tower; late Gothic parish church; Calvary with Baroque chapels; the market place has houses with Gothic central elements.
