Salpeter, Edwin E#

Salpeter, Edwin E., b. Vienna, Dec. 3, 1924, physicist. Emigrated to Australia in 1939 and studied physics and mathematics there. Has pursued his scientific career in the USA. Since 1949 at Cornell University, Ithaca, first as the research assistant of Hans A. Bethe, then as J. G. White Distinguished Professor in the Physical Sciences; 1997 emeritus professor. Basic research in nuclear physics and quantum mechanics; research in astrophysics (polar caps of neutron stars, galaxy clusters). Numerous important awards.
