Sandling#
Sandling Mountain, Styria, alt. 1,717 m, mountain containing salt deposits near Altaussee. Mountain refuge: Lambacher Huette (alt. 1,432 m). First documented mention of Aussee salt mining in 1147, still operating (in 1993: 992,000 m3, largest salt production in Austria, 80 employees); brine is transported by a pipe-line to Ebensee. Underground depots for safe storage of works of art, currently not in use.
