Schafranek, Franz, b. Nove Hrady, Czech Republic (then Gratzen), Feb. 6, 1930, d. Vienna, June 4, 1991, actor, director, theatre manager. From 1945 in Austria, then theatre studies in Stockholm; 1955/56 worked with B. Brecht at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in East Berlin; 1959 returned to Vienna, assistant director at the Burgtheater, 1961-1965 dramatic advisor, 1965-1967 programme adviser for Austrian television. 1963 founded with his wife, the American actress R. Brinkmann, Vienna´s English Theatre; director of more than 40 productions at this theatre and at several German-language theatres in Vienna; numerous awards.
