Schaunberg#
Schaunberg castle, Upper Austria, castle ruins in the municipality of Hartkirchen in the district of Eferding. The castle, built on a cliff falling down to the level of the Danube (first documented mention in 1160) was the residence of counts who were closely associated with the emperor. After 1390 these counts administered the fiefdoms of the Habsburg family as vassals, but lost their Imperial estates in 1548 and died out in 1559. Since the 17th century the castle has fallen into disrepair, and in 1825 the keep collapsed.
