Scheffer von Leonhardshoff, Johann Evangelist, b. Vienna, Oct. 30, 1795, d. Vienna, Jan. 12, 1822, Nazarene, historical paintings, engravings and lithographs. Studied at the Vienna Academy under H. Maurer, member of the painters´ association Lukasbund, 1812 study trip to Northern Italy, then in Klagenfurt as a painter in the service of the Prince Bishop of Gurk F. X. Salm, who sent him to Rome in 1814 where he worked closely together with F. Overbeck. Nicknamed "Raffaelino" by his artist friends, 1816 returned to Klagenfurt, 1819 moved to Vienna, 1820/21 last visit to Rome. Worked mainly on religious themes.
