Scheibenschlagen#
Scheibenschlagen, custom, in which burning wooden discs are hurled down into the valley using poles or switches. In Tirol and Vorarlberg the custom of Scheibenschlagen takes place on the first Sunday of Lent, also called Funkensonntag ("Fire Sunday") or Scheibensonntag ("Disc Sunday") ( Bonfire Customs). In some areas this custom is practised by the local Burschenschaft at Easter (e.g. in the Lungau mountain area in the province of Salzburg), at the solstice and at the bonfire ceremonies on the eve of St. John the Baptist´s Day (Carinthia); often accompanied by the recital of rhymed charms.
