Schmidt, Heide#

b. Kempten (Germany), Nov. 27, 1948. Studied law, went into politics (Freedom Party, FPOe, Liberal Forum, LIF). 1988-1990 secretary-general of the FPOe; 1990-1993 Deputy party leader of the FPOe; in 1992 presidential candidate for the FPOe; 1987-1990 Member of the Bundesrat; from 1990-1999 Member of the Nationalrat (FPOe, from 1993 LIF). 1990-1994 Third President of the Nationalrat. After increasing differences with J. Haider she stepped down from her FPOe functions in 1993 and founded the Liberales Forum (LIF), of which she was federal spokeswoman until 2000; presidential candidate for the LIF in the 1998 presidential elections.
