Schmitz, Richard#
b. Mohelnice, Czech Republic (then Mueglitz), Dec. 14, 1885, d. Vienna, April 27, 1954, politician (Christian Social Party), director of the Katholischer Volksbund. 1920-1934 member of the Nationalrat, 1922-1924, 1930, 1933/1934 Minister of Social Affairs; as Minister of Education (1926-1929) put an end to the school dispute with the Social Democrats in 1927 and established new school types, Hauptschule (secondary modern school), a secondary school for workers (Arbeitermittelschule) and an intensive two-year grammar school (Aufbauschule). Vice-Chancellor (1930) and Mayor of Vienna (1934-1938; initiator of the scenic Vienna Hoehenstrasse road). 1938-1945 in a concentration camp, then chief executive of the Herold-Verlag publishing company.
