Schnitzler, Michael, b. Berkeley (USA), Aug. 7, 1944, violinist; son of Heinrich Schnitzler, grandson of Arthur Schnitzler, great-grandson of Johann Schnitzler. 1962-1967 member of the ensemble Wiener Solisten; 1966-1973 first concertmaster of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra; 1970-1974 first violinist of the S. Quartet; since 1965 violinist of the Haydn Trio. Since 1982 professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Since 1991 chairman of the association "Regenwald der Oesterreicher", which is devoted to the protection of the rain forest in Costa Rica; supervised a development cooperation project in Costa Rica in 1993-1995 and headed the first Austrian research station in the tropics focussing on rain forest research and tropical biology. Awarded the Konrad Lorenz Prize for Environmental Protection in 1995.
