Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Ludwig Ferdinand#

b. Kaliningrad, Russia, (then Koenigsberg), Oct. 11, 1788, d. Vienna, April 13, 1853. Historical and landscape painter, illustrator, son and pupil of the painter Johann Veit S. von C. and brother of Julius S. von C., came to Vienna in 1804 and studied at the Vienna Academy. Joined the Overbeck circle and was supported by Archduke Albert Kasimir von Sachsen-Teschen. 1821 conversion to catholicism, part of the circle of romanticists around Z. Werner and C. M. Hofbauer, which also influenced the choice of the subjects of his pictures; in the twenties he mainly painted subjects from the Bible, history and poetry, later under the influence of J. A. Koch, also heroic-romantic landscapes. Teacher of M. von Schwind, from 1841 curator of the Imperial Paintings Gallery in the Belvedere.
