Schreyvogel, Joseph Pseudonyme Thomas West, Karl August West#
b. Vienna, March 27, 1768, d. Vienna, July 28, 1832, writer, dramatist, critic; great-great-uncle of Friedrich Schreyvogl. His classical vision of the arts strongly influenced Austrian poets (especially F. Grillparzer, E. von Bauernfeld and J. C. von Zedlitz). 1794-1797 in Jena, contributor to Schiller's "Thalia" and Wieland's "Merkur"; 1802-1804 and 1814-1832 secretary and dramaturge at the Hofburgtheater in Vienna. His consistent planning of the theatre's repertory (Weimar classics, Grillparzer premières), the enlargement of the company (S. Schroeder, H. A. Anschuetz, C. Fichtner) and his insistence on a standard pronunciation led to the theatre's being called "Burgtheater" and contributed to its recognition as one of the leading stages of the German-speaking countries; 1807-1809 publisher of the "Sonntagsblatt" and the journal "Aglaja".
