Schwanthaler, Thomas#

b. Ried im Innkreis (Upper Austria), June 5, 1634, d. Ried im Innkreis (Upper Austria), Feb. 13, 1707. Most important Upper Austrian sculptor in the second half of the 17th century; father of Johann Franz Schwanthaler and Franz Matthias Schwanthaler. Took over the atelier of his father Hans S. in 1656; combined the local style of wood carving with the more emotional style coming from the South to obtain a realistic depiction of the human body.
