Sailing: The first sailing clubs in Austria were founded in Vienna, on Lake Woerth and Lake Attersee in 1886. Despite being a landlocked country, sailing has developed very well in Austria, on account of the many Alpine lakes. Austrian competitors have also been quite successful on an international level. Austria had produced 22 European champions and 14 world champions by 1994. In the Olympic Games H. Raudaschl (Mexico 1968, Finn-Class, and Tallin 1980, Star-Class) and W. Mayrhofer (Tallin 1980, Finn-Class) won silver medals. Austria´s last world champion was H. Spitzauer (Melbourne 1995, Finn-Class). The Austrian Sailing Association (Oesterreichischer Segel-Verband, OeSV), which was founded in Vienna in 1946, had more than 17,000 members in 77 clubs in 1994 and is one of the most successful Olympic summer sports associations in Austria.
