b. Prague (Czech Republic), Nov. 6, 1771, d. Munich (Germany), Feb. 26, 1834. Actor and dramatist. Invented lithography, a new chemical method of flatbed printing, when looking for a simpler printing technique for his plays. He was granted a first privilege in Bavaria in 1799, he opened up the first lithographic printing shop in Vienna in 1803 and also produced polychromatic prints from 1826.
