Silberwährung#
Silver Currency, currency based on silver coins as the only legal means of payment or as backing of the money in circulation, while the fractional currency is made up of low-value, base-metal coins. Existed in Germany and Austria during the whole Middle Ages and in the modern age; gold was used as parallel currency for a long time (= coin possessing face value). A pure silver currency was not introduced in Austria until 1858, when the Gulden became the Austrian currency (1 Gulden = 100 Kreuzer); in 1892 the silver currency was replaced by the gold currency (1 Krone = 100 Heller).
