b. Vienna, April 18, 1780, d. Heiligenstadt (Vienna), Oct. 2, 1860, law scholar. University professor in Lemberg, then high official in Vienna. From March to July 1848 Minister of Education, from April also Minister of Justice. Proclaimed the freedom of teaching and learning and abolished the pillory and branding as legal punishment.
