Sonnenblume#
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus), plant originating from the southern USA. Up to the onset of flowering, its heads (with approx. 2000 individual flowers) constantly turn to the sun (French name "tournesol"). Cultivated as bird feed and oil production (rich in linoleic acid; extraction plant at Bruck an der Leitha); large-scale cultivation since 1987, crop area in 1994 37,299 hectares, average yield 2.8 tons/hectare.
