Sprenger, Aloys#
b. Nassereith, Tirol, Sept. 3, 1813, d. Heidelberg, Germany, Dec. 19, 1893, physician and orientalist. Studied with J. von Hammer-Purgstall, then in Britain and the Netherlands. Lived in India from 1843, where he was instrumental in the preservation of Urdu (now the national language of Pakistan) and the cultural heritage of Islam. From 1858 University Professor of Oriental languages at Berne, Switzerland.
