St. Pantaleon-Erla#

St. Pantaleon-Erla, Lower Austria, municipality in the district of Amstetten, alt. 242 m, pop. 2,208, area 28.30 km2, situated in the flatlands of the Danube near St. Valentin. - commercial school (private), Sankt Pantaleon-Erla run-of-river power plant (built in 1964, 27.1 MW), two gravel pits, wood processing. - Grave find dating from the Hallstatt period; Roman coins was found in Kleinerla, Roman legionaries' barracks found in Albing, late Roman ceramic oven and watch tower; Slav grave field; late Gothic parish church with a crypt (early 12th century) which, along with Goess (Styria) and Ranna (Lower Austria), is one of the oldest in Austria; castle (16th century, formerly a moated castle), additions in the 18th century. In Erla, former abbey of Benedictine nuns (dissolved in 1783, the oldest in Lower Austria), now a castle with a quadruple-winged layout; parish church (former abbey church), late Gothic hall church (1438-1448), high altar (1867), numerous gravestones (14th -17th centuries).
