Stabius Stab, Stöberer, Johannes#

Stabius (Stab, Stoeberer), Johannes, b. Steyr (Upper Austria), around 1460, d. Graz (Styria), Jan. 1, 1522, monk, humanist, natural scientist and historiographer. Professor of Mathematics at Ingolstadt, where he met K. Celtis; from 1497 at the University of Vienna. Was a friend of many humanists and poets and was crowned poet laureate by Celtis in 1502. From 1503 in the service of Maximilian I, whom he accompanied on many journeys, advised on scientific and literary questions and warned of uncritical genealogical research. S. created the 1st flat representation of the earth´s surface in true proportions (published by J. Werner in 1514 and hence known as the Stab-Werner heart-shaped projection), wrote a genealogy of the Habsburgs and the verses for the "Ehrenpforte" pictures by A. Duerer dedicated to Maximilian I.
