Young specimens have a large white patch at the base of their wings and white tail feathers with a dark band at the end; adult colour usually reached at 5-6 years. Eyries in steep rock walls, more rarely on trees. Golden eagles usually hunt in wide open spaces. Approximately 400 pairs still breed in the Alpine area.
