Steinl (Steindl), Matthias, b. around 1644, d. Vienna, April 18, 1727, architect and sculptor. One of the most important designers and sculptors of the Austrian Baroque era. His plans were often realized by J. Munggenast.

Vienna: high altar in the parish church in Hietzing, 1698; pulpit in the ´Peterskirche´, 1715/1716. - Lower Austria: parish church in Laxenburg, 1693-1695; church of the monastery in Zwettl (design of Western front and façade of the steeple, realization by Munggenast 1722-1728); in Duernstein (worked on the interior decoration; reliefs of the entrance door 1721-1725, design of the high altar 1726, church tower 1733); in Klosterneuburg (high altar, choir stalls, adaptation of the "Augustinersaal" to the baroque style 1725-1727, portal of the cemetery). - Styria: high altar in Vorau monastery, 1701-1704. - Wood carvings in Gutenstein (Lower Austria); wall fountain in Kremsmuenster (Upper Austria).Literature#
