Strzygowski, Josef#
Strzygowski, Josef, b. Biala (Poland), March 7, 1862, d. Vienna, Jan. 2, 1941, art historian, founder of comparative art studies. From 1892 university professor in Graz and 1909-1933 in Vienna. Recognized the significance of Near Eastern art for explaining late Antique and medieval form principles, which was a major contribution to research into history of art on the one hand, but which was also flawed by his racist theories. His anti-classical attitude as well as his methodical approach were in sharp contrast to other representatives of the Vienna school (M. Dvořák, J. A. v. Schlosser).
