Substandardwohnungen#
Sub-standard Housing, i.e. homes which do not meet modern living standards, in Austria for the most part dates back to the years of 19th century Promoterism (Gruenderzeit) and before, when immigration to Vienna and other Austrian cities and towns reached its peak and large numbers of immigrants had to be accommodated in a short time. Sub-standard flats are for the most part small (bed/living-room and kitchen or living-room, small bedroom and kitchen) and have no or only very primitive private water supply and toilets. In the course of Urban Renewal many sub-standard buildings have been demolished, small flats merged to form larger units and/or modernised. Between 1971 and 1991the number of sub-standard flats in Vienna declined from 262.000 to 133.000.
