Tauernbahn#
Tauern Railway, 83-km-long mountain railway between the towns of Schwarzach-St. Veit (in the province of Salzburg) and Spittal an der Drau (Carinthia), built from 1901-1909 as railway connection between Salzburg and Trieste (Italy) by K. Wurmb; the Tauern Railway was then continued through the Karawanken and Wochein (Bohinj) tunnels. It passes underneath the Hohe Tauern Range through the 8.5 km-long Tauern tunnel between Boeckstein (province of Salzburg) and Mallnitz (Carinthia), where a motorail terminal has been in operation since World War I. The Tauern Railway was electrified between 1933 and 1935 and, with the exception of the stretch through the tunnel, was only equipped with single tracks. Since 1969, additional twin-track sections have been opened, which has led to the construction of four impressive reinforced-concrete bridges on the southern descent in the Moelltal valley.
