Tauernkraftwerke AG, TKW#

Tauernkraftwerke AG, TKW, electric power company, in operation from 1947-1999 with 8 storage power stations (Zemm-Ziller, Gerlos, Glockner-Kaprun, etc.) in the provinces of Salzburg and Tirol, and 3 run-of-river power stations on the central section of the River Salzach; it also had shares in 4 other run-of-river power stations on the River Salzach. TKW supplied the Verbund (Austrian Power Grid) with about 3 billion kWh of electric power annually (approx. one third of the peak current produced by storage power stations in Austria). As well as water power, other sources of energy were also exploited, such as solar and wind power; with particular emphasis on optimising generating efficiency. Subsidiary companies of Tauernkraftwerke AG included Tauernplan Consulting, Tauernplan Pruef- und Messtechnik as well as some holdings. Another subsidiary, Tauernkraftwerke Tourismus, was a tourist operator. TKW also had shares in other companies, such as Gletscherbahnen Kaprun (funicular and aerial ropeways), Altec Alpine Umwelttechnik (environmental engineering) and Lestin Tauch, Spreng und Bergungsunternehmen (blasting and salvaging activities). In 1999 merged with Oesterreichische Donaukraftwerke AG ( Donaukraft), Verbundkraft Elektrizitaetswerke GmbH and VEG into the newly formed Verbund-Austrian Hydro Power AG, which is part of the Verbundkonzern.
