Tausend-Mark-Sperre#

Tausend-Mark-Sperre (Thousand Mark Ban): Following the expulsion of the Bavarian Minister of Justice, H. Frank, from Austria on March 15, 1933, the Government of the Third Reich passed the Reichsgesetz law of June 1, 1933, which was designed to exert economic pressure on Austria. Under this law, each German citizen had to pay an amount of 1000 Reichsmarks before being allowed to travel to Austria. Due to the high proportion of German tourists (approx. 40 % of total tourists in Austria, as of 1932), the effects on the Austrian economy were considerable. The Thousand Mark Ban was lifted in 1936.
